OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – With both teams sitting with one loss in the 2014 Big 12 Baseball Championship, West Virginia and Baylor will faceoff today at 4:15 p.m., ET, in Oklahoma City.
The winner will advance to face TCU on Saturday at 10 a.m., ET, needing to beat the undefeated Horned Frogs twice in the double-elimination style tournament.
The Mountaineers (28-25) swept the regular-season series against the Bears, winning both matchups back on March 28 and 30 in the Big 12 opening series for each school. The scheduled third game of the series, played in Charleston, W.Va., was cancelled because of inclement weather.
Baylor (25-30) fell to TCU in the opening game of the tournament, 8-5. The Bears trailed 8-0 in the eighth inning before rallying. BU was able to get the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but its rally came up just short.
The Bears bounced back on Thursday, eliminating the No. 3 seed Kansas with a 4-3 win, improving its record to 10-4 in one-run games this season.
The Bears’ closer Josh Michalec, who earned All-Big 12 First Team honors, earned his 21st save of the season against the Jayhawks yesterday. Michalec’s 21 saves this season are a single-season Big 12 record.
Bobby Boyd led the Mountaineers offensively in West Virginia’s 6-2 defeat at the hands of TCU last night. Boyd was the lone WVU batter with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4.
Ryan McBroom is now 4-for-9 with 3 RBIs in the 2014 Big 12 Baseball Championship.
The Big 12 Championship will have all games televised on Fox College Sports, while WVU’s games can be heard on the affiliates of the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG College.
