WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG today announced its talent lineup for Mountaineer football broadcasts, bringing back familiar award-winning voices, while adding new talent to provide new information and insights.
Tony Caridi, multiple winner of the state’s Sportscaster of the Year Award who began working with the former Mountaineer Sports Network in 1987 as a television play-by-play announcer, will serve as chief radio play-by-play announcer for West Virginia University football, joined in the booth by analyst Dwight Wallace.
Wallace, a former offensive coordinator at West Virginia, enters his 15th season as an analyst of WVU football on the new network. From 1985-1990, Wallace served on legendary Mountaineer football coach Don Nehlen’s staff in various roles, including assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach.
Sideline reporter Jed Drenning also returns to the broadcast for his fifth season covering WVU football. Drenning, a well-known personality to fans in the Mountain State, appeared on WVU’s pre-game coverage for nearly a decade and previously played two years (1990-91) for coach Nehlen. He finished his career at Glenville State as three-time All-America quarterback. Drenning then served as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Glenville (1994-99) and also played pro football in Germany and in the Arena Football League with the Albany Firebirds.
Pregame, halftime and postgame show duties will be handled by Jeff Culhane, who joins the WVU broadcast following six years of service at Husker IMG Sports Network, where he handled the pre-and post-game football shows. Culhane hosted the “Sports Nightly” state-wide talk show from Lincoln and has called Nebraska baseball since 2010. From 2005 to 2007, the AP award-winning broadcaster served as play-by-play voice of South Dakota’s women’s basketball, while filling in on football and men’s basketball as well.
Dale Wolfley and Amanda Mazey will contribute pregame analysis and reporting.
Dale Wolfley significantly expands his reach with Mountaineers fans after hosting a two-hour pregame radio show last year. Wolfley was a four-year letter winner and Mountaineer standout offensive lineman from 1987-90, helping lead WVU to one of its best three-year periods in school history, including an undefeated regular season in 1988 and an appearance in the National Championship game. The Sporting News All American returned to his alma mater in 2008 as the Coordinator of Player Development, following a three-year stint as the head coach at Phoenix Community College in Phoenix, Ariz. Since August, 2010, he has been Coordinator of the WVU Varsity Club for student-athlete alumni.
Amanda Mazey is a familiar face to Mountaineers fans from her work as sideline reporter for MSN last year. The ECU graduate began her media career in 1995 with WZMB radio. Her experience includes television stints in Washington, NC, where she held various anchor and reporter slots in the news and sports departments, and in Dallas/Ft. Worth, covering TCU.
“We’ve very excited about the familiar voices returning to the Mountaineer radio broadcasts along with the addition of some new personalities,” said Chris Ferris, VP of Broadcasting at IMG College. “The combination of our award-winning play-by-play team in the booth with reporting and analysis from former WVU star student athletes, and talents who have covered big time college sports in other major football markets, adds up to a formidable team bringing fans Mountaineers football.”
West Virginia University and IMG College, which operates the nation’s largest independent sports radio network, formed a broad 12-year multimedia rights and sponsorship partnership including exclusive representation and management of game broadcasts and coaches’ shows on the Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG beginning in the 2013-14 season.
Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG plans to add four hours of pre- and post-game coverage for WVU football. Pregame shows will expand from one hour to 3.5 hours and postgame shows to two hours from 30 minutes. The network now has 40 affiliates carrying live WVU sports with more expected to be announced.
