Damon Cogdell is ready to hit the ground running.

West Virginia’s newest assistant football coach was in town today handling some administrative things before being permitted to get out on the road recruiting to help the Mountaineers finalize their 2014 signing class.

WVU coach Dana Holgorsen hired Cogdell last week as a defensive coach, although specific staff assignments for the 2014 season have yet to be announced.

Cogdell was a two-year starting linebacker for Coach Don Nehlen’s Mountaineers, helping WVU to bowl-game appearances in 1997 and 1998. Cogdell’s most productive season came as a junior in 1997 when he managed 66 tackles, including five tackles for losses, through eight games before a hip injury at Syracuse ended his season.

Cogdell came back following surgery to play as a senior in 1998, sharing time at the Sam linebacker spot with Chris Edmonds before moving to middle linebacker.

Most recently, Cogdell was a successful coach and athletic director at Miramar (Fla.) High where he developed one of the top football programs in the Sunshine State. Now, Cogdell is back in Morgantown to help the Mountaineers on the defensive side of the football.

Our Jeff Culhane was able to catch up with Cogdell to get his thoughts on returning to WVU and coaching in the Big 12 Conference in our latest WVU Sports Podcast now ready for download, and also available on iTunes.
