MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The 2014 West Virginia gymnastics season officially opens this Friday, Jan. 10. In anticipation of the excitement that is sure to follow the Mountaineers again this year, The Extra Tenth also returns this week.
This season’s first edition features freshman Mackenzie Myers. A Middletown, Md., native, Myers joins the Mountaineers after competing level 10 gymnastics at Frederick Gymnastics Club. A 2012 Junior Olympics National Championships qualifier, she finished seventh on floor at the meet. Additionally, Myers finished fourth on beam and fifth on floor and bars at the 2013 Region 7 Championships.
Third-year Mountaineer coach Jason Butts believes Myers’ best gymnastics is in front of her. She is expected to compete in the floor lineup this Friday and will push for a spot on bars and beam in the future.
The Mountaineers open their season at No. 21 Kentucky, with No. 15 Penn State and Ball State, this Friday, at 7 p.m., at Memorial Coliseum, in Lexington, Ky.
