MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Extra Tenth is back in 2014! A blog dedicated to the West Virginia University gymnastics team, a different Mountaineer will be featured every week.
This season’s fourth edition features freshman Nicolette Swoboda. A talented all-around gymnast out of Westbury, N.Y., Swoboda has made a splash in her first three career meets, competing all four events and reaching the podium five times, including back-to-back third-place finishes on vault.
Currently, Swoboda ranks a team-best No. 16 on beam in the Southeast region. She also ranks No. 8 in the all-around and No. 19 on vault.
A level 10 gymnast at Gold Medal Gymnastics Center, Swoboda was a three-time qualifier for the Junior Olympics National Championships. Most recently, she placed 10th in the all-around at the 2013 JO National Championships and won the all-around, vault and beam at the 2013 Region 6 Championships.
Swoboda and the Mountaineers (2-3) return to the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 2, and play host to George Washington and Towson at 3 p.m. at the second annual “Wendy M. Roach Invitational.” The invitational is a “Pink Meet” to promote breast cancer awareness, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink. The team will accept sundry item donations for Morgantown’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center at the Blue Gate.
