WVU Concludes Tour

SANTARCANGELO, Italy – Senior Kevin Jones scored 27 points and junior Deniz Kilicli posted a double-double to lead West Virginia to a 74-64 victory over professional basketball team Basket Santarcangelo Saturday in Santarcangelo, Italy, in the final game of WVU’s trip to Italy.

Jones was 12-of-19 from the field, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, and pulled down nine rebounds for the Mountaineers. Kilicli had 12 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard Darryl Bryant scored 14 points, shooting 10-of-12 from the free throw line.

The Mountaineers held a 19-12 lead after the first quarter, but Basket Santarcangelo led 36-31 at halftime. WVU then outscored Basket Santarcangelo 23-15 in the third quarter to take a 54-51 lead after three quarters. The Mountaineers again outscored their opponent 20-13 in the final quarter for the 74-64 win.

“We didn’t start out very well,” said WVU head coach Bob Huggins. “We played yesterday and this was a hot, hot gym. I thought we came back. We started out alright, quit playing for a while and finished the game pretty strong.”

Pat Forsythe had eight points and grabbed five rebounds. Tommie McCune (four points), Keaton Miles (four points), Aaron Brown (two points), Dominique Rutledge (two points) and Kevin Noreen (one point) rounded out WVU’s scoring. Brown, McCune and Noreen each pulled down six rebounds.

For the game, WVU shot 39.1 percent from the field, 15.4 percent from 3-point range and 78.2 percent from the free throw line. Basket Santarcangelo shot 40.0 percent from the field, 25.0 percent from 3-point range and 32.3 percent from the free throw line. WVU won the rebounding battle, 49-34.

The Mountaineers are scheduled to fly home Sunday.

“I think the trip has been great,” added Huggins. “We played five games and had four practices here. I think we got a lot of work done.”
