SIGONELLA, Italy – Junior Deniz Kilicli scored a game-high 20 points to lead West Virginia to a 98-57 victory over Naval Air Station Sigonella at the Naval Air Station in Sigonella on the island of Sicily.
Kilicli was 8-of-12 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line for his game high total. He was one of four Mountaineers in double figures as Kevin Jones posted 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Darryl Bryant scored 15 points and was 6-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range. Freshman Pat Forsythe posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers.
"We got a lot of our younger guys a lot of minutes tonight,” said head coach Bob Huggins. “We tried to get our guys to run the offense, and I think the competition will get stronger as we go on.”
West Virginia shot 62.2 percent (33-of-53) from the field, 60.0 percent (6-of-10) from 3-point range and 66.7 percent (26-of-39) from the free throw line. West Virginia held NAS Sigonella to 27.4 percent (20-of-73) from the field.
The Mountaineers outrebounded NAS Sigonella, 46-30. West Virginia had 16 assists and 13 steals. West Virginia led 51-27 at halftime.
Freshman Tommie McCune had eight points and nine rebounds, while junior Dominique Rutledge had six points and six rebounds. Freshmen Aric Dickerson and Kevin Noreen added seven points each for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers will depart Sicily for Rome early Friday, where they will remain until Tuesday. West Virginia will practice Friday afternoon before heading to Vatican City on Saturday.
