MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team claimed its nation-best 15th NCAA National Championship in 2013 – and the squad finally has the banner to prove it!
The Mountaineers unveiled their new national championship banner this week at the WVU Rifle Range, commemorating the accomplishment of last season’s squad.
The banner arrived in late January from the NCAA National Office and previously hung in the NCAA Hall of Champions, in Indianapolis, Ind., for the past year. It now proudly hangs alongside the 2009 NCAA Championship banner.
Within the Hall of Champions, WVU is listed at the Men’s and Women’s Rifle kiosk as the 2013 National Collegiate Champion and is reflected on the digital map with the total number of championships won by WVU.
Fans have their first chance to view the two championship banners today, as the No. 1-ranked Mountaineers battle No. 3 Alaska-Fairbanks at the WVU Rifle Range. Competition between the counting squads begins at 12:30 p.m., and fans will be invited to sit inside the range for the air rifle relay, set to start at approximately 3 p.m.
