This is the sixth of a season-long series that will feature updates on WVU swimming and diving alumni, as well as getting to know members of the current team.

Senior swimmer Peter Murto is in the early stages of his final year with the team. He not only is focused to succeed this season but also on reaching his career goals outside of the pool.

The Morgantown native scored a pair of eighth-place finishes in the 100 breast (57.65) and 200 breast (2:07.82) at the Big 12 Championships. He was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 Swimming & Diving First Team.

“I’ve been training harder because it’s my final season. I don’t want to disappoint my coaches and myself.” explained Murto.

While working on finishing his career strong as a Mountaineer this season, Murto also faces the challenges of balancing his final year as an industrial engineering student at WVU.

“It’s not horrible with study hall and the access to tutors,” said Murto. “I do have a lot less time though to hang out with the team. I’m always doing schoolwork right after practice.”

Even with a full course-load and the demands of swimming in his final season, Murto always has the support of his sister Katie, who is a sophomore on the women’s squad.

“Before both of us came to WVU, I don’t think we were as close. Being on the same team in college has brought us together,” explained Murto. “We’ve been on the same team since we were in the third grade. Now we are older and having her on the same team as me is pretty cool.”

With all the pieces in place for a successful final year as a student-athlete here at West Virginia, Murto is also excited about his future with the prospects in graduate school and in the professional workplace.

“I’m trying to go to grad school, so I’m taking the GRE at the end of October,” said Murto. “I’m going to grad school for Health Administration, so hopefully I can work in a hospital after I graduate.”

Taking advantage of all his resources inside and outside the pool, Murto is determined to succeed in his career after he graduates

Murto and the rest of the swim team will be in action at the West Virginia State Games in Morgantown, W. Va. on October 11-12.
