It’s time for a Mountaineer social media experiment, and by virtue of reading these words you are already involved.

I received an impassioned email Wednesday from a buddy that has a dream. It’s not an unrealistic dream - it’s just a dream that needs your help. In short, my friend wants a return of the old standard “Let’s Goooooo Mountaineeeeeeers” cheer.

Sure he could sit in the stands next Thursday night when Colorado visits and try to start it himself, but that’s kind of like throwing a rock in the ocean and hoping to start a tidal wave.

It ain’t happening.

So he needs your help, which is where the social media takes over. Read his email below (which I’ve edited because he kind of got fired up in a few places) but his basic point remains intact. If you want to get involved, share this on your Facebook, Twitter or whatever social media device you use. I am told the average page views of my columns range from 25-35,000. So what you do next will either get this thing rolling or ending.

If the interest is there, then we’ll figure out a way to start the cheer next Thursday when the Buffs’ visit. We’ll pass the info along via various social media sites and on the radio. We’ll find out together if within a span of seven days we can create a renaissance for a cheer that many Mountaineer fans seem to truly miss.

On a personal note, I love the idea because I’m a fan of cheer/chant/songs that are the foundation of European soccer fans. There’s something incredibly powerful when an entire stadium is chanting/cheering in unison.

At any rate, that leads us back to the email that will serve as the catalyst for our experiment. Read it and decide whether to share or not.

TC:

I'm back on a mission regarding a topic that has bothered me for years and I'm looking for your opinion and maybe some help. Here's the deal, I want to bring back and "re-teach" the traditional "Let's Go Mountaineers" cheer and find a way to get it to work at the stadium. We lost that cheer when we moved to the new stadium, and less and less people seem to know or remember how it goes. At old Mountaineer Field it would put the hair up on the back of your neck when the entire stadium did this cheer in unison, and it was intimidating as heck. Logistically it was difficult at the new stadium so it has basically disappeared and been replaced by that one side, other side garbage we copied from Penn State. And now because so much time has passed, and the students don't even know the old way, we have lost the cheer not only at the stadium, but in the Coliseum as well. It's a pity the thing is gone since it was one of the most unique cheers in all of college sports.

Anyway, I'm curious to know what you might think about this and about whether Coach Stew would, or could, be an advocate for its rebirth. It would be great if you and he could champion this effort since I know it would happen if you did.

The beauty of the old cheer is that it includes a rhythmic arm pump that goes along with it. Teach the Mountaineer the cheer and arm pump, put her where she can be seen, tell everyone to visually cue off her, play an example over the PA, and let her rip. Can you imagine 65,000 people doing that cheer in unison? It would be eerie and scare the (heck) out of our opponents, not to mention way cool.

That's my rant for today, what do you think?

I think it’s time for the Mountaineer Nation to make the call. What say you?
