MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman outside hitter Nikki Attea has been named Big 12 Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced today.

The East Amherst, N.Y., native is the second player from WVU to earn a volleyball weekly honor in the Big 12 this season. Freshman outside hitter Hannah Sackett won the Big 12 Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week award on Aug. 27.

Attea was named MVP of the Gold and Blue Classic after posting 34 kills, 3.40 kills per set, a .304 hitting percentage, 17 digs and eight blocks against Cleveland State and Murray State. Combined with a mid-week matchup with Robert Morris on Tuesday, Attea recorded double-digit kills in all three matches last week and posted double-doubles in back-to-back matches against Robert Morris and Cleveland State. In the Mountaineers' three matches last week, Attea led WVU with 49 kills, 3.27 kills per set, a .278 hitting percentage and was third on the team in digs (28) and total blocks (10). She is currently ranked second on the team in kills (120), fifth in digs (62) and third in total blocks (33).

The Mountaineers will resume Big 12 Conference play against other Big 12 newcomer TCU, on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 5 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.
