MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 14/19 West Virginia women’s basketball team will play host to the USC Upstate Spartans in a 1 p.m. matchup, Saturday, Nov. 17 at the WVU Coliseum.

Coach Mike Carey, as this season’s honorary chairperson for The Morgantown Salvation Army Red Kettle Christmas Campaign, has teamed up with the Salvation Army’s “Forgotten Angels”, which allows those names on the angel tree that go unadopted still receive a present at the holiday season. As a part of the campaign, the game will be dedicated to the area’s forgotten angels and fans who bring an unwrapped toy for the Angel Tree Program will receive a voucher good for admittance to a future WVU women’s basketball home game.

The Mountaineers (2-0) enter Saturday’s game after picking up a 60-57 come-from-behind win at Boston on Monday. The Spartans (1-2) come to Morgantown off a 71-64 overtime win on Thursday night at Norfolk State. Saturday’s game is the fourth consecutive road game in one week for USC Upstate.

In Monday’s outing, WVU had three players record numbers in double figures, led by senior Ayana Dunning, who had her second-consecutive double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Like USC Upstate’s win on Thursday, the Mountaineers trailed into halftime and came out to take the lead and win the game. Crystal Leary, who rattled off seven-straight points to help re-gain the lead, and Averee Fields each contributed 11 points, marking the first time each has recorded double-digit scoring numbers and career highs.

The Mountaineers’ scoring and rebounding leader this season is Dunning with 13.5 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game, respectively. Junior Christal Caldwell is the second-leading scorer with 11.5 points per game, while Leary is the second-leading rebounder with 6.0 boards per game.

Freshman Brittany Starling is USC Upstate’s leading scorer with 11.3 points per game, while senior guard Tee’Ara Copney holds a 10.7 points per game scoring average. Shelby Hicks is USC Upstate’s leading rebounder as she averages 6.3 rebounds per game. Senior guard Tyra Smith had seven assists in the last outing and currently leads the team with 17 assists (5.7 assists/game). The Spartans return four starters and six letterwinners, in addition to eight newcomers, to this season’s roster under Tammy George, who is in her 10th season at the helm of the program.

Parking for the women’s basketball game is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis in all lots except the football RV lot. Fans are also encouraged to use the Coliseum Band Lot, and the additional parking located next to the WVU Tennis Courts.

For those unable to attend, a recap of the game, live video and live stats also are available online at www.WVUsports.com. Fans can tune into WAJR (1440-AM locally) to hear the game live with Travis Jones on the call.
