Mark down another honor for sophomore Jess Crowder today. The Cary, N.C., native picked up the program’s first Big 12 Conference weekly honor, being named Defensive Player of the Week.

Crowder successfully made the move from attacking midfielder to outside back for the Stanford contest last weekend, logging a career-high 90 minutes. It was also just her third career start, first at defender.

The WVU defense recorded its first shutout of the season against Stanford, the defending national champions. The Cardinal were held without a goal, snapping a 25-game streak of scoring at least one goal. The Mountaineers allowed only one shot on-goal and one corner kick on the day.

Each week throughout the season, the Big 12 announces an Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, and Newcomer of the Week.

TCU and West Virginia became the Big 12’s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech. Kansas State, however, does not field a women’s soccer program.

Every soccer program in the Big 12 last fall ranked in the top 100 in the final NCAA RPI listing – a league first.
