Former West Virginia women’s soccer standout Bry McCarthy was one of six players overall assigned Friday to the Western New York Flash, who are one of eight teams in the new National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Joining McCarthy on the Flash roster are Americans Abby Wambach, the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year, and Carli Lloyd, Canadian Jodi-Ann Robinson and the Mexican tandem of Veronica Perez and Pamela Tajonar.

U.S. Soccer is subsidizing the salaries of the 23 American players, while the Canadian Soccer Association and the Federation of Mexican Football will each do the same for 16 players.

Players and clubs submitted preferences, and a panel of experts familiar with the player pools provided input on the players to form the allocations. Clubs will now fill out rosters, expected to be from 18 to 20 players, through free agency and next Friday’s NWSL College Draft in Indianapolis.

The NWSL includes four teams from WPS – the Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars and New Jersey-based Sky Blue FC – and four new franchises in the Seattle Reign, Portland (Ore.) Thorns, FC Kansas City and Washington (D.C.) Spirit.

The inaugural NWSL season will debut this spring.
