MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University’s Bry McCarthy and the Western New York Flash clinched the inaugural National Women’s Soccer League regular-season title.

Coming into the final weekend of play, the Flash tallied three points in a 2-1 victory over Boston on Saturday, Aug. 17. Tied atop the rankings heading into Sunday, Kansas City could have claimed the title with a win or tie over Chicago. The KC Blues were unable to hold off the Red Stars, though, falling 2-1.

The Flash struggled early in the season, only recording one point over their first three games. They caught fire in the middle of the year, going unbeaten over nine games, and then closed the season on a seven-point run. This marks the first time all year the Flash are first in the standings.

McCarthy saw limited action this season. She became the 15th All-American in Mountaineer history, and the 12th alum to join the professional ranks.

The Western New York Flash will face off against the No. 4-seeded Sky Blue FC on Saturday, Aug. 24. With the top seed, the Flash will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, including hosting rights for the championship game should they advance past Sky Blue FC.
