MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fresh off a season-opening weekend that saw the Mountaineers collect their first victory of the 2013 season, West Virginia women’s soccer goalkeeper Sara Keane
has been named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Today’s honor, the first of the season, is the third conference weekly award for the senior out of Mt. Laurel, N.J. Keane was spectacular against No. 2 Penn State in the team’s season opener on Aug. 23, helping deliver a 2-2 draw in the Penn State Invitational at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa. She faced 21 shots from the 2012 national runners-up, including 10 on-goal, and 10 corner kicks, and she made eight saves, matching her career high.
Keane returned to the net for the invitational closer on Sunday, Aug. 25, and helped the No. 19-ranked Mountaineers (1-0-1) to a 2-1 victory over Syracuse. She saw nine shots in the match, five on-goal, and six corners.
Baylor’s Ashley York was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.
The Mountaineers open their 2013 home season this Friday, Aug. 30, against Central Michigan, at 5 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. WVU also will welcome Morehead State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
