DURHAM, N.C. – West Virginia University forwards Frances Silva
and Kate Schwindel
were named to the 2013 Duke Nike Classic All-Tournament Team today following the invitational’s last contest at Koskinen Stadium.
The duo earned a combined seven points in the Mountaineers’ 0-1-1 showing over the weekend.
Silva, a senior out of Overland Park, Kan., scored two goals, including the team’s lone goal in a 1-1 draw against No. 12 Duke on Friday. Additionally, with WVU down 4-0 in the second half to No. 1 North Carolina today, she put the Mountaineers on the board on a penalty kick, the team’s first of the season, in the 59th minute.
Through six games, Silva owns a team-best 12 points on four goals and four assists. She has earned at least one point in every game this season and has scored a goal in the last three straight contests.
Schwindel, a junior from Livingston, N.J., cut the Tar Heels’ lead to two less than four minutes after Silva’s penalty-kick conversion. Silva and sophomore forward Kelsie Maloney
assisted on the goal. WVU ultimately lost to the defending national champions, 4-2.
Schwindel is second on the team with seven points, including three goals.
The Mountaineers (3-1-2) return to Morgantown next weekend for a two-week home stand. WVU plays host to Eastern Kentucky on Friday, Sept. 13, at 5:30 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
