UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Carlee Payne’s golden goal in the 98th minute lifted No. 25 BYU past No. 9 West Virginia, 1-0, Monday afternoon at Jeffrey Field in game two of the Penn State Invitational. BYU countered WVU's corner kick, giving Payne a breakaway in the extra session.

The Mountaineers could not capitalize on several scoring chances as they totaled 20 shots, including 13 from the trio of Bry McCarthy (5), Megan Mischler (4) and Carolyn Blank (4).

“This was a great opportunity for us to learn that we need to be ready to play a full 90 or 110 minutes each time out,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Right now we have to reload, refocus and get ready for Duquesne.”

After a sluggish start, West Virginia came out much stronger in the second half, including a near goal in the 48th minute from defender Erica Henderson. Henderson fired a shot hard towards the far post where BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson came up with a diving save.

In the 55th minute, defender Nicole Mailloux hit the crossbar off a free kick following a BYU hand ball on the right flank.

West Virginia had another chance at the 73:39 mark when BYU’s Andrea Willis was called for obstruction. Mailloux served a ball into the box where Blank’s header skimmed just wide of the left post.

Payne led the Cougars with four attempts as BYU finished with 14 shots. Payne also had BYU’s best scoring chance of the match in seventh minute when her free kick dinged the crossbar from 30 yards out.

West Virginia goalkeeper Kerri Butler came up with big saves in each half, finishing with five stops for the second-straight match.

WVU’s best scoring chance of the first half came in the 20th minute on a shot from forward McCarthy on a ball slotted inside the box from midfielder Bri Rodriguez. McCarthy’s shot drifted just wide of the far post.

Olson made five saves in working the entire match in goal for BYU.

Midfielder Heather Saffel played a career high 30 minutes off the bench to spark the WVU offense in both halves.

WVU moves to 1-1-1 on the season while BYU improves to 2-0-1.

The Mountaineers have a short turnaround as they play host to Duquesne on Thursday, Sept. 3. Kick off at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
