MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team finished in second place this afternoon at the James Madison Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va.

Host JMU placed first with 168.5 points, while the Mountaineers followed in second (142 points), Robert Morris finished third (125 points), William and Mary finished fourth (101.5 points) and George Mason finished in fifth (77 points).

“This meet was a great opportunity to get the group in a competitive frame of mind,” coach Sean Cleary says. “Although none of the participating teams went to the well in terms of scoring points, it was just fun to see everybody chipping in to create a team score. JMU has a very well rounded team and it showed in today’s results.”

WVU started the day sweeping the 800-meter run as senior Keri Bland came in first with a time of 2:08.00, junior Jessica O’Connell finished in second (2:10.53) and Heather Saffel placed third (2:28.53).

Next, senior Marie-Louise Asselin and junior Kate Harrison then took the top spots in the 1,500-meter run, crossing the line in 4:30.00 and 4:34.00, respectively, while senior Kaylyn Christopher, sophomore Sarah-Anne Brault and junior Ahna Lewis swept the 3,000-meter race.

Christopher led the pack, crossing the line in 9:30.00, while Brault placed second in 9:40.00 and Lewis finished in third 9:40.00.

In the high jump, WVU was once again represented well as freshman Sydney Cummings cleared a season-best height of 1.70 meters for first place. Junior Katelyn Williams followed in second after also clearing 1.70 meters and senior Natasha Redman finished third at 1.65-meters.

In other field events, sophomore Lindsay Kopenhaver finished fifth in the pole vault (3.35 meters), sophomore Meghan Mock finished second in the long jump (5.55-meters) and Terina Miller placed third in the hammer throw (42.88 meters) and fourth in the shot put (11.67 meters).

Brittany Fink, Heather Adams and Brittney Thomas also placed well in the discus, as Fink placed fourth (37.26 meters) and Adams and Thomas tied for fifth (37.13 meters).

WVU will continue action on Saturday, April 24, in Loretto, Pa., with the fourth annual Saint Francis Father Bede Invitational.
