MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team moved into the Top 10 this week, landing a spot at No. 7 in the Soccer America poll and at No. 14 in today’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. Junior defender Meghan Lewis also was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week.
WVU opened the 2010 season at No. 24 in the coaches poll on Aug. 10. Today’s NSCAA poll is the final poll of the regular season; a postseason poll will be announced on Dec. 7.
Lewis scored the game-winning goal over the weekend in the BIG EAST Championship finals to give West Virginia its second conference tournament title. Her goal in the 82nd minute earned her the tournament’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player award. She also helped the defense recorded its 13th shutout of the season. Lewis and her teammates did not allow a single goal the entire BIG EAST tournament.
The Mountaineers received a No. 3 seed in the 2010 NCAA Championship and will face Morehead State in the opening round of tournament action Friday, Nov. 12, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Friday’s match will kick off at 6 p.m.
West Virginia is riding a school record 12-match win streak. WVU has now qualified for the NCAA tournament in 11 straight seasons – the nation’s ninth longest streak.
