MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University football player quotes from Monday evening’s media session. The Mountaineers travel to Pitt this Friday, Nov. 26, for a noon game.
Defensive end Scooter Berry
on the defense’s goals for Friday’s game
We just want to go out there and operate and execute every play for 60 minutes. We’ll let everything else take care of itself. You can’t think about things outside of the game. We can’t control that stuff. We just want to do our part.
on the importance of both teams’ defenses
They (Pitt) plays hard-nosed football, and everyone likes a hard-nose game. We’re looking forward to playing a big game, and hopefully both sides of the table will come out on the field and we can all play well.
on the defense’s success and the pressure to stay at the top
I don’t want to say there is pressure, because we just go out there on the field and play our game. If we continue to do what we do, the stats will take care of themselves. It’s nice to know that you are one of the top defenses in the country, but at the end of the day it’s all about how you play.
on the defense’s “swagger”
You got to have swagger. Coach Stewart says to play with arrogance, not ignorance, so we try to buy into that. If you feel good, you’re going to play good.
on the importance of the WVU-Pitt game
It means everything to me. I’m pretty sure you guys know that because I did cry on national TV last year (after WVU’s win). It feels good to play in this rivalry, and I’m looking forward to Friday. I hope everyone else is, too.
Quarterback Geno Smith
on facing the Pitt defense
Basically we just have to protect, and I need to do a good job of getting the ball out of my hands and being sharp on my reads.
on being the starting quarterback in a WVU-Pitt game
It’s an honor to be a part of this great rivalry. It’s always just been another game to me, but it’s obviously a lot different for the people of this state. It’s a very traditional game, and I’m looking forward to it.
I’ve had the chance to experience this game and see how great it actually is, so I’m prepared and ready for it.
on getting sacked by opposing defenses
It’s a combination of a lot of different things. A sack is never good. It comes down to a lot of different things, whether I hold on to the ball too long or a guy gets beat on an island. It’s expected, given so many plays over the game. It’s just something that you have to deal with and get over.
on his growth as a quarterback this season
I didn’t really know what to expect coming in this season. I knew I had the ability to be successful and that I had worked hard, but you have to go out and play the game. I just do my best to try and limit my mistakes on Saturdays.
Wide receiver Tavon Austin
on the WVU-Pitt rivalry and the possibility of winning the BIG EAST Championship
It’s good. We still have a chance to go in there and be No. 1 in the BIG EAST. We’re just going to go in there and play a good game, and hopefully we can come out as winners.
on the playing surface at Heinz Field and who it favors
They (Pitt) probably have a little advantage because they play on it more, but at the same time, everyone has to go out there and play on it on Friday.
on the WVU offense’s consistency
If we take care of the ball and don’t have any turnovers, we should go out there and win the game. We have the talent to win games. The last couple of games we’ve been clicking and things seem alright, so right now we just need to bring it all together.
on the play of Pitt
They are a good team. They play hard on defense. Their cornerbacks play tough, so you have to go out there, run good routes and hopefully Geno will get me the ball.
