Swimming: Mountaineers Fall to Ohio
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU women’s swimming and diving team fell to the Ohio Bobcats, 176-122, in their final dual meet of the regular season on Saturday afternoon in the WVU Natatorium. “The ladies had a tremendous meet today winning eight of the 12 individual races. We had to rearrange our lineup a little bit, but they were able to respond with successful swims,” coach Vic Riggs said. “We are now going to use these next two and a half weeks to prepare as best we can for the BIG EAST Championships.” After Ohio took the early lead with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay, Kata Fodor took first place in the 1000 free with a time of 10:09.05. Rachael Burnett followed up Fodor’s performance with a first-place finish (1:52.17) of her own in the 200 free. Mandie Nugent followed Burnett in second place in 1:54.49. Rachael Gorrie swam to second place (58.17) in a close 200 back race. Danielle Smith and Nikki Vetterlein finished fourth (59.55) and fifth (59.55), respectively. West Virginia then had a 1-2 finish of their own with Jaryn Studer taking first (1:06.13) and Breanna McCann placing second (1:06.68). Nugent continued her successful afternoon with a first-place finish in 2:04.30 in the 200 fly. Austen Carrington also scored with a fifth-place finish (2:11.69). After a break for diving, Burnett scored her second victory of the day with a time of 53.03 in the 100 free. The 200 back featured Smith finishing in third place (2:08.24), followed by Carrington in fourth (2:08.42). Studer and McCann went 1-2 once in again in the 200 breast with both swimmers taking their final positions in the last 25 yards of the race. Studer finished in 2:23.20, with McCann finishing in 2:23.81. Melissa Schreiber also scored points with her fourth-place finish (2:25.04). Burnett and Fodor followed up with another 1-2 finish in the 500 free. Burnett’s third first-place finish was in 4:55.26, while Fodor finished second in 5:01.20. In the 100 fly, Nugent was able to score points with a second-place finish (57.54), with Vetterlein also scoring with a fifth-place finish (1:00.13). McCann was then able to get her own first-place finish with a time of 2:09.86 in the 200 IM. The meet ended with the 200 free relay team of Smith, Fodor, Gorrie and Burnett taking third in 1:39.03. The Mountaineers will now take time to prepare for the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships in Louisville, Ky. The diving championships will be from Feb. 11-13, while the swimming portion will be Feb. 16-19. |
