Baseball: WVU Takes Game One
McBroom hit his first career home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie and give WVU a 4-1 lead. Buckner and Gum were both driven in on the blast as Buckner was hit by a pitch and Gum singled up the middle. Griffin then hit his first of the season over the left field fence, extending the lead to 5-1 in favor of West Virginia. Jones (2-1) finished the afternoon with 5.2 innings pitched, giving up two hits and two unearned runs, while striking out four. Mike Thomas (1-1) pitched a complete game for the Broncs, allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out seven. West Virginia (6-6) finished the game with five runs on eight hits and one error, while Rider (4-5) had three runs on three hits and an error. Rider was able to get on the board in the top of the first after a walk to Karl Johnston, who proceeded to steal second and third base. Johnston then scored on a double to left field by A.J. Albee, allowing Rider to take an early 1-0 lead. West Virginia was able to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Jeremy Gum hit into a double play, plating Justin McDavid, who walked to begin the inning. Rider put forth a valiant effort in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs, but sophomore Michael Twigg was able to force Johnston into a popup to shortstop to end the inning and leave the bases loaded. Twigg then pitched a scoreless seventh inning to complete his afternoon and earn his first career save. Junior second basemen Dan DiBartolomeo led West Virginia offensively with a 2-for-4 performance, while Griffin went 2-for-3 with a home run and RBI. Albee led the Broncs with a run scored and an RBI on 1-for-4 hitting. |
