VSR: Schrand Student-Athlete of the Week
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman Courtney Schrand has been named WVU Student-Athlete of the Week for her efforts in the Varsity 8+ event at the 2011 BIG EAST Rowing Championships in West Windsor, N.J., last weekend.
The Virginia Beach, Va., native was honored as a first team all-BIG EAST winner at Sunday’s regatta, which was her first appearance at a BIG EAST Championship.
The crew started the day with a third-place finish in heat two of the first Varsity 8+ race, finishing with a time of 7:03.72. The Mountaineers pushed ahead of Connecticut (7:06.31) to earn a spot in the grand finals, where they finished in sixth place in 7:01.94.

This Week in Baseball
The WVU baseball team will play host to Cincinnati in a three-game BIG EAST series at Hawley Field … the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. and will finish the series with a 1 p.m. start time on Sunday.
Last Week in Baseball
The squad went 1-2 last week, falling to Villanova by scores of 5-1 and 7-2 in the series’ first two games … the Mountaineers were able to salvage the series, winning game three 4-2.

Redshirt senior Grant Buckner continued his hot streak, going 5-for-10 last weekend with a run scored, a double and one RBI … Buckner has now reached base in 36 consecutive games, the most in the BIG EAST … redshirt freshman T.J. Kuban made one start, but played in all three games recording a 4-for-6 performance with one RBI … freshman righty Ryan Tezak earned Sunday’s win, allowing one hit in 1.2 innings of work and striking out two.

The West Virginia University rowing team will conclude its fall season on May 13-14, as it travels to Philadelphia, Pa., to compete at the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River.

WVU concluded its spring season with an overall record of 8-14, going 4-7 in BIG EAST action after falling to Rutgers and St. John’s in the tournament ... the Mountaineers began the match by capturing the doubles point, winning, 8-2, in the No. 1 spot and clinching the point with an 8-0 victory in the No. 3 spot ... St. John’s came back to tie the match in the No. 1 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over freshman Melis Tanik, but freshman Mary Chupa regained the lead with a 7-6(3), 6-0 victory in the No. 3 spot ... the Red Storm tied the match for a second time with a 7-6(10), 6-3 victory over freshman Anna Rodionova in the No. 6 spot ... St. John’s clinched the match after winning two consecutive tiebreakers over sophomore Emily Mathis (4-6, 6-2, 5-7) in the No. 2 spot and junior Veronica Cardenas (6-3, 1-6, 3-6) in the No. 4 spot.

The West Virginia University track and field team is set to travel to Villanova on Friday for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships … held at Jumbo Elliott Track, the event will take place on May 6-8, starting with the heptathlon on Friday.

In preparation for the conference championships, the Mountaineers saw excellent performances at the Penn Relays, as well as the Ashland Alumni Open.

Junior Meghan Mock led WVU at the Penn Relays with a first-place showing in the Eastern division of the women’s long jump … Mock took the top spot with a personal-best distance of 6.17 meters, which qualifies her for the BIG EAST Championships and places her third on WVU’s all-time record list for the event … also competing last week, junior Terina Miller posted a personal-best performance in the hammer throw at the Ashland Alumni Open after throwing 52.60 meters, good for fifth place.
