MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Pitt’s Zach Duggan belted a two-run homer to left centerfield in the fourth inning to break a 6-6 tie and lead the Panthers to a 10-6 victory, today, over West Virginia to complete the BIG EAST Conference series sweep at Charles L. Cost Field in Pittsburgh.

The Panthers hit back-to-back-to-back doubles by John Schultz, Kevan Smith and David Chester in the seventh inning to add two more runs to extend their lead to 10-6, the final outcome.

Pitt (31-19, 15-9 BIG EAST) scored 10 runs on 10 hits and committed one error, while West Virginia (27-23, 13-11 BIG EAST) scored six runs on 12 hits and committed one error.

At the plate, the Panthers were led by Smith, Chester and Rick Deveraux with two hits each. Smith finished with two RBIs, Chester had three and Deveraux and Travis Whitmore each had one.

The Mountaineers were led offensively by Jeremy Gum, who finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Matt Molloy collected three hits and had an RBI.

Pitt’s Kevin Dooley (2-1) picked up his second win of the season, pitching 1.2 innings of relief, giving up two unearned runs on a hit, walking two batters and striking out two. Starter Ethan Mildren lasted 3.1 innings, giving up four runs, two earned on eight hits and striking out three batters.

WVU’s Berry (7-3) took the loss, giving up 10 runs, eight earned on 10 hits, walking four and striking out three. Mountaineer pitching gave up six doubles, two home runs and walked eight batters.

West Virginia took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Grant Buckner walked and then scored on Gum’s double to left center. Pitt's Chester hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning to give the Panthers a one-run lead.

WVU tied the game in the second inning when Isac Franklin reached on a fielder’s choice and then scored on Malloy’s double to right center.

Pitt struck for four runs in the third inning to take a 6-2 lead. A single by Smith, followed by an error by WVU left fielder Ryan McCBroom plated two runs. Devereaux doubled to left center to plate a run, and Whitmore flew out to left to drive in the fourth run.

West Virginia put up a four spot in the fourth to even the score once again, at 6-6. Franklin and Malloy led off with singles and then moved up a base on Mark Dvorznak’s sacrifice to the pitcher. After Brady Wilson walked to load the bases, Buckner reached on a fielding error by second baseman Whitmore, plating Franklin and Malloy from second and third, respectively. Gum then singled to right field to drive in both Wilson and Buckner.

The tie was short lived when Pitt’s Duggan hit a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the inning, giving the Panthers the 8-6 advantage.

West Virginia completes its regular season schedule with a three-game BIG EAST Conference series playing host to Rutgers on May 19-21. Thursday and Friday’s games start at 7:05 p.m., and the final game on Saturday
