Football: Neild Wins Meisel Award
The Meisel Award, presented by the Loyalty Permanent Endowment Fund of the WVU Alumni Association, recognizes a graduating member of the football team who has achieved the highest grade point average. The award is named for Louis D. Meisel, a former player on the 1928 football team. Neild has been recognized for accomplishments on and off the field by numerous academic and athletic organizations, including being named an All-American candidate and All-Big East preseason first team by Phil Steele’s preview, Athlon Sports, Yahoo! Sports and Sporting News. The three-year starter was named to the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll and received the Ideal Mountaineer Man by the WVU coaching staff. Neild was named Big East Academic All-Star and played in the Gator (2007, 2010), Fiesta (2008), and Meineke Car Care (2008) bowls. During the 142nd Commencement Ceremonies, held May 13-15, WVU’s former nose tackle received his bachelor’s degree in Multidisciplinary Studies with concentrations in business, communication and exercise/sports psychology. "The experiences that I had as both a student and an athlete here at West Virginia University are ones that I will take with me for the rest of my life," noted Neild. WVU Director of Athletics Oliver Luck, who received the Meisel Award in 1982, presented Neild with his award, plaque and a financial stipend recognizing his accomplishments. “Chris Neild has worked hard to balance his role as an athlete with that of a student. His accomplishments are a wonderful example of what you can achieve at West Virginia University. I am proud to present him with this honor,” said WVU Director of Athletics Oliver Luck, a former Meisel Award recipient. Neild was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 2011.
