COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Two second half goals by No. 4 Maryland led the Terrapins to a 3-1 victory over the No. 17 ranked West Virginia University men’s soccer team on Monday evening at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md.

After WVU took the lead in the first half, Maryland netted an equalizer in the 53rd minute on a successfully converted penalty kick by John Stertzer to the left of the diving WVU keeper Pat Eavenson. The penalty call came after a hand ball in the box by WVU senior defender Uzi Tayou.

Stetzer then gave Maryland the go ahead goal in the 60th minute as he headed a free kick by Taylor Kemp from 35 yards out past Eavenson to extend Maryland’s lead to 2-1.

Throughout the game there was much physicality that eventually led to a red card to senior forward Franck Tayou in the 63rd minute after he went up for a header with Maryland keeper Will Swaim. The WVU bench was given a yellow on the play as well.

West Virginia was then forced to play a man down for the remainder of the match that led to an insurance goal by Maryland’s Jereme Raley in the 69th minute.

Maryland (2-0-0) finished with 16 shots and four corner kicks, while WVU (1-1-0) had eight shots to go along with six corner kicks. The Terrapins held the edge in fouls 20-19.

Freshman forward Andy Bevin scored his first career goal in the seventh minute of action to give WVU the early 1-0 lead. The offensive attack began with senior Raymon Gaddis bringing the ball over midfield, before handing it off to junior Shadow Sebele. Sebele then played a through ball to junior Uwem Etuk who proceeded to cross to a sliding Bevin. Bevin was then able to finish on the near post fending off a Maryland defender.

Game action started quickly with Casey Townsend of Maryland bringing the ball down 11 seconds after the start of the match and running right into Eavenson. Eavenson was able to challenge Townsend and disrupt the play.

Eavenson was again tested and made the save in the 21st minute when Maryland’s Sunny Jane weaved through WVU defenders and passed it off to Stertzer who took the shot.

Eavenson made another big save in the 43rd minute as Mullins crossed to Townsend who had a strong header that Eavenson stopped corralled.

Eavenson finished the game with three saves, while Maryland’s Swaim made two saves.

The Mountaineers will be back in action this weekend with the WVU Nike Classic presented by Jersey’s Subs. WVU will take on Binghamton on Friday, Sept. 2, at 7:30 p.m., while they will face Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept.4, at 5 p.m. The weekend will also serve host to the 50 year reunion of the WVU men’s program with events throughout the weekend.
