WACO, Texas – The West Virginia volleyball team lost a 3-0 (14-25, 19-25, 20-25) battle to Baylor tonight at the Ferrell Center.

In the third straight road match, the Mountaineers (2-6) struggled offensively against the Bears (6-1) who recorded 74 digs and four team blocks.

The first set was all about Baylor as the Bears started the set with a 20-10 lead. Freshman middle blocker Evyn McCoy attempted to spark the Mountaineer offense with two kills, but the Bears were too much and the team ultimately fell 25-14.

The Mountaineers started the second set strong by quickly taking a 3-1 lead with a service ace by junior outside hitter Anke de Jong and service errors by Baylor. The Bears fought back and used service aces by Brittany Ridenour to gain a 7-4 advantage. WVU stayed close the rest of the set before a block by de Jong and a Baylor error put the Mountaineers down by one at 18-17. The team could not stop the Bears’ offense as Baylor went on a 7-2 run to end the set.

Down two sets, WVU used kills from de Jong and senior outside hitter Kylie Armbruster to take an 11-8 lead in the third set. With no room for error, the team never let Baylor gain an advantage as the score was tied eight times. With the score tied at 20, the Mountaineer offense could not get past the Baylor block as they stopped the Mountaineers twice on their way to taking the set and the match.

WVU was led by de Jong who recorded seven kills and senior libero Serinna Russo who posted 23 digs and one service ace.

WVU returns to action next weekend at the University of Kentucky Invitational in Lexington, Ky., from Sept. 9-10. The Mountaineers will take on Houston and Loyola Marymount on Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively. The team will then face host Kentucky on Sept. 10 at 5 p.m.
