Volleyball: Mountaineers Fall to Lions

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The West Virginia University volleyball team was defeated by Loyola Marymount 3-0 (15-25, 15-25, 19-25) in its second match at the University of Kentucky Invitational.

In their very first meeting, the Mountaineers (2-8) could not overcome the Lions’ (5-2) tough serving as it posted six service aces.

After trading points to start the first set, the Lions gained an advantage with four straight errors from the Mountaineers. Down 20-13, WVU struggled offensively as LMU went on to record 11 kills and a .300 hitting percentage to take set one.

WVU started the second set with a 7-3 lead before the Lions proceeded to go on a 7-1 run to gain the control of the set. The Mountaineers came back within four, but three kills and two service aces from Jasmine Rankins ended the set 25-15.

Down two sets in the match, the Mountaineers could not overcome the deficit and lost the match in three sets.

Senior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky led the Mountaineers with six kills while sophomore defensive specialist Stephanie Mock and senior libero Serinna Russo chipped in 10 and 15 digs, respectively.

The team will finish out the invitational tomorrow night against host Kentucky at 5 p.m. at the Memorial Coliseum.
