MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (Feb. 3, 2012) – The West Virginia University women’s tennis loss its match to Pitt on Friday afternoon, 5-2, at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.

“We really came out and had a tough situation since we were playing one player short,” said coach Tina Samara. “We have gone through a lot of adversity this year, and it really showed today. Our girls were a bit overwhelmed. If we would have played with intensity like we did in singles, we would have won today.”

The match was complicated immediately for the Mountaineers, as they defaulted one doubles match and one singles match to the Panthers.

Pitt took advantage of the default in doubles and was able to win a second doubles match in order to gain the doubles point.

“It was extremely important to try and take the doubles point today because of the situation,” Samara said. “We just came out flat in doubles.”

Despite the early 2-0 lead in favor of the Panthers, WVU fought back in singles play.

Senior Veronica Cardenas and sophomore Mary Chupa were each able to score dominant victories over their opponents from Pitt. Cardenas won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 against Amanda Wickman, while Chupa defeated Gabriel Catanzariti, 6-2, 6-2.

“Veronica and Mary came out and took care of business today,” Samara said. “Mary played a tough match against the same opponent in the fall, but she showed how much she has improved with the way she was able to win this afternoon.”

After freshman Ikttesh Chahal dropped her singles match the Panthers held a 3-2 lead and left the Mountaineers needing victories in the two remaining singles matches to pull out the win.

Despite WVU’s comeback attempt, Pitt would close the match out with wins in the final two singles matches.

The Mountaineers’ are now 0-4 overall this season.

WVU will return to action on Sunday at 12 p.m., as they play host to Akron at Ridgeview Racquet Club.
