MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team fell short in a match to the Golden Eagles of Marquette, 6-1, Sunday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wis.

“Marquette is a solid team,” said head coach Tina Samara. “They play very well as a team as do the players they put on the court. Going out against teams like this we must start out with a stronger energy than we have in the past and this is something we will continue to work on improving.”

As the day started with doubles, the duo of Emily Mathis and Mary Chupa played a well-fought match against the Golden Eagles’ Gillian Hush and Olga Fischer, but unfortunately was unable to pull out on top, losing 8-6. Veronica Cardenas and Ikttesh Chahal also fell short to their opponents and were defeated 8-3.

“Coming out stronger in doubles play and with more energy is something we will continue to improve on,” Samara said.

In singles play, Mathis, who suffered a stomach strain, put up a fight against the Marquette’s Hush, but fell short, losing 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 1-0 (10-2).

Chahal continued to rally, defeating the Golden Eagles’ Ana Pimienta, 6-4, 6-4.

“I think it’s particularly important to not only note that Ikttesh won, but how she won,” Samara said. “She continues to improve every week and we are hoping that she continues to do so throughout the season.”

Also competing in singles play for the Mountaineers were Catie Wickline, who was defeated 6-1, 6-1, Chupa, who was defeated 6-1, 6-2, and Cardenas, who rallied against Marquette’s Ali Dawson but fell short 6-2, 7-5.

“What’s going on with winning and losing isn’t as important as the idea that we are continuing to improve as a team week by week,” Samara said. “With our continued improvements, we are only bettering ourselves for the conference tournament. Regardless of our loss today to Marquette, who performs very well, we had a lot of positives to take away from the match.”

West Virginia will compete again, Saturday, February 25 at 5 p.m. as it travels to Ohio to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats.
