Baseball: WVU Completes Tournament
Hinkle threw four innings in his second start of the season, scattering four hits and one run, while striking out five. Dierdorff entered the game in the fifth inning and immediately had an impact by striking out the side. He finished with eight strikeouts in four innings, allowing just one hit. WVU (3-4) recorded three hits in the losing effort, while the Patriots finished with one run on five hits. Neither team committed an error. Brig Tison broke the scoreless tie for George Mason in the third inning after hitting a double down the right field line and scoring two batters later on a Blaise Fernandez single through the left side. West Virginia’s Matt Frazer led off the fourth inning with a double smacked to right center field. Frazer advanced to third on a ground out by Chris Rasky, but was unable to score as the Patriots third baseman made a nice play on a grounder by Nate Antone to end the inning. The Mountaineers loaded the bases in the seventh inning for another rally, but were unable to have anyone cross the plate. Ryan McBroom opened the frame with a lead off single up the middle. After back-to-back hit by pitches to John Polonius and Jon Roszel, Max Nogay came to the plate with two outs and had a deep fly out to center field to end the threat Frazer led WVU offensively with a 2-for-4 performance, while McBroom and Billy Fleming each had hits. George Mason was led at the plate by Tison, who finished 2-for-4 with one run and a stolen base. The squad will be back in action next weekend with the Dairy Queen Classic from March 2-4 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. WVU’s opponents will be Nebraska, Minnesota and New Mexico State. |
