MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team defeated Dayton on Sunday afternoon, 4-3, in Dayton, Ohio.
The Mountaineers (3-7) began the day by taking the doubles point, as they took two of the three doubles matches from the Flyers. The lone doubles loss was a default in the No. 3 doubles match.
Newly paired doubles teams of sophomore Mary Chupa and freshman Ikttesh Chahal along with junior Emily Mathis and senior Veronica Cardenas scored the doubles wins for WVU.
Cardenas and Mathis were dominant in an 8-0 win, while Chupa and Chahal also put on a powerful display in an 8-4 victory.
After a default by the Mountaineers in the No. 6 singles match, the contest headed into singles play tied at one apiece.
Cardenas got WVU off on the right foot in singles play, as she continued her streak of solid play by defeating Dayton’s Erin Filbrandt, 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 4 singles match. The win was Cardenas’ team-leading sixth singles win of the season.
WVU also received singles victories from Chupa and Mathis, who was playing through the pain of a stomach strain that occurred in last weekend’s action.
Chupa’s singles win was her fourth of the season. The singles victory for Mathis was also her fourth of the season.
The Mountaineers will return to the court again on Saturday, March 3, as they will take on BIG EAST foe Syracuse at 3 p.m. at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
