Baseball: WVU Falls to Pitt

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU baseball team fell to Pitt, 14-5, in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Hawley Field.

WVU dropped to 16-24 with the loss and 4-10 in BIG EAST play, while Pitt improved to 19-19 and 4-10. The Panthers out-hit WVU 11-7 and did not commit an error to WVU’s two.

Sophomore first baseman Ryan McBroom continued his hot bat with three hits, including two doubles. McBroom also walked and knocked in a run. Junior right fielder Brady Wilson added two hits as well, with two runs and one RBI.

Pitt was led by three hits, three runs and two RBIs from Evan Oswald. Rick Devereaux added a grand slam, with two runs and two walks.

Left-hander Marshall Thompson (3-6) took the loss for WVU, allowing eight runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. Thompson struck out three and walked two. Pitt starter Matt Iannazzo pitched a seven inning complete game, allowing five runs on seven hits. Iannazzo struck out four WVU batters and walked three.

The teams finish the three-game series this afternoon at 2:45 p.m., at Hawley Field.
