MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Throwers Heather Adams
and Karissa Knabenshue
competed well in the discus throw and shot put Saturday to end competition for the Mountaineers at the Ashland Alumni Open in Ashland, Ohio.
Adams, a Reedsville, Pa., native, earned a second-best career discus throw of 45.89 meters for third place in the event. The mark topped her discus throw of 45.38 meters last week at the Larry Ellis Invitational and was just short of her personal-best 46.29 meters from the Raleigh Relays, WVU’s second-best all time distance for the event.
Buckhannon, W.Va., native Knabenshue threw the discus 41.57 meters, also her second-best personal record, for seventh place in the field. A little shy of her personal-best 41.61 meters from the Jesse Owens Classic, she did top last week’s 41.51-meter discus throw from the Larry Ellis Invitational.
Knabenshue also competed in the shot put with success Saturday afternoon, earning an 11.27-meter distance for 13th place in the event. She had previously competed in the event at the Jesse Owens Classic.
Including Saturday’s discus throw league re-qualification distances from Adams and Knabenshue, a total of 18 WVU athletes have qualified for 14 events at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships, which run next weekend from May 4-6 in Tampa, Fla.
