Track: Hamric Qualifies for Olympic Trials
The Bruceton Mills, W.Va., native will run in the event Thursday at 6:50 p.m. ET in the preliminaries round with a field of 30 athletes. The top 24 runners advance to the semifinals Friday at 6:45 p.m., of which the top 12 advance to the finals Sunday at 7:23 p.m. “Karly is very excited to have been given the invitation to the trials,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “Team USA is the best track and field team in the world. To be involved in the Olympic trials – the meet that selects the team for the Olympic Games – is a tremendous honor. Joining Chelsea Carrier-Eades, Josh Simpson and Clara Grandt as WVU grads and state natives is a wonderful reflection of how far West Virginia has progressed in the sport.” The top three finishers from the finals round advance to represent the United States at the 2012 London Olympic games in August. Hamric, a 1,500-meter All-American from the 2010 season, was given from May 2011 through June 2012 to qualify for the trials, and her time of 4:13.04 last July at a race in Victoria, British Columbia was accepted Tuesday by the U.S. Olympic Trials selection committee. After a semifinals run last weekend in the 100-meter hurdles, WVU senior Chelsea Carrier-Eades will compete in the first four events of the heptathlon Friday with the 100-meter hurdles (1:30 p.m.), high jump (2:30 p.m.), shot put (4:15 p.m.) and the 200-meter dash at 5:15 p.m. The final three heptathlon events occur Saturday with the long jump (6 p.m.), javelin throw (7:15 p.m.) and the 800-meter run at 9:20 p.m. The heptathlon field will consist of the nation’s top 18 heptathletes.
