MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University Director of Athletics Oliver Luck has released the schedule for the upcoming 2012-13 swimming and diving season.
“I’m excited about the schedule that coach Vic Riggs has put together as we enter into a new era of competition in the Big 12,” Luck says. “As always, the schedule has a nice mix of dual meets and championship style meets, allowing the teams to grow throughout the season.”
The slate is highlighted by three home meets at the WVU Natatorium in WVU’s inaugural season of competition in the Big 12 Conference.
“As we take the next step in our program development, having top programs to compete against is always important,” Riggs says. “I feel this schedule accomplishes this and gives our athletes the best chance to perform well at the Big 12 and NCAA Championships.”
The season opens during the second weekend of October with a visit to Marshall (Oct. 12-13) for the second annual West Virginia State Games. Last season in Morgantown, the Mountaineers placed first in the meet against the likes of Marshall, Fairmont State, Wheeling Jesuit, West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins.
West Virginia opens its home season with a dual meet against Penn State on Oct. 12, followed by a trip to Villanova, while the women will also take on James Madison, on Oct. 27. The following weekend both teams will travel to Cincinnati (Nov. 2).
After the Pitt Invitational (Nov. 15-18) and a short winter break, the Mountaineers will head out to the Jacobs Aquatic Center in Key Largo, Fla., for their annual training trip from Dec. 27-Jan. 10. After training, WVU returns home before heading to Pitt on Jan. 12 for a dual meet.
West Virginia and fellow Big 12 member TCU will battle in a dual meet for the first time in history, with the Horned Frogs making a trip to Morgantown on Jan 19.
“As we enter the Big 12 Conference, I’m excited that we have added a home and home agreement with the TCU program that starts in Morgantown,” Riggs says.
The women’s squad completes the dual meet schedule and hosts Ohio on Jan. 26.
The Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center will serve as the host of the Big 12 Championships, Feb. 20-23, in Austin.
From March 15-17, qualified divers with participate in the NCAA Zone “A” Diving Championships on the campus of Rutgers.
IUPUI will serve as the host site for both the men’s (March 28-30) and women’s (March 21-23) NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, at the IU Natatorium and IUPUI Sports Complex.
