February 29, 2008
CONWAY, S.C. - West Virginia’s Chris Enourato had a walk-off single to right field to break a 7-7 in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Mountaineers an 8-7 victory over Western Carolina today in day one action of the Baseball at the Beach Tournament, hosted by Coastal Carolina.
Senior shortstop Tyler Kuhn reached first on a bunt single down the first base line to open the ninth inning. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jedd Gyorko. Pinch-hitter Enourato then drove in Kuhn for the game-winning run with a line drive single to right field.
“This was a tremendous win for us,” commented Head Coach Greg Van Zant. “Anytime a team from up north can beat a team from the south is a great showing. Our guys never gave up and we came back big time.”
Mountaineer junior Ross Fetterly recorded his first win of the season (1-0) after holding the Catamounts hitless for four-straight innings in relief action. The right hander registered four strikeouts and surrendered just one hit, facing 19 batters in 4.1 innings of work.
Gyorko led the Mountaineers (3-2) with two hits and three RBI on the day. Kuhn finished with two hits, including a double, two runs and two RBI and Justin Parks tallied two hits and an RBI.
Western Carolina’s reliever Chris Masters took the loss, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits.
Western Carolina’s J.C. Lyons hit a two-run homer to center field in the top of the first, giving the Catamounts a quick 2-0 lead. After a scoreless second inning, the Catamounts stretched their lead on back-to-back doubles, driving in two runs in the top of the third inning to put Western Carolina up 4-0.
The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning when Kuhn doubled to left center to bring in outfielder Grant Buckner. Gyorko drove in Kuhn and Dan Dibartolomeo with a two RBI single, cutting the Catamount lead to one, 4-3.
Western Carolina stretched its lead to 5-3 in the fourth inning on Dylan De Graaf’s RBI single. The Catamounts added two more runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead at 7-3. Blake Murphy doubled down the left line to score Barrett Shaft from first base. Lyons then singled, scoring Murphy for their second run of the inning.
WVU scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 7-7. Buckner scored on a Kuhn sacrifice fly to right. Gyorko then picked his third RBI of the game with a single to center that scored Parks.
Junior Austin Markel was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning and then scored off of sophomore Jordon Yost’s double to deep center. Yost scored on Parks’ double to center field.
