GAME ONE | GAME TWO
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU baseball team swept a doubleheader against Canisius this afternoon at Hawley Field. The Mountaineers won game one, 7-1, and took game two, 9-1. Both were seven-inning games. WVU previously swept Seton Hall in three games, March 24-25.
Junior Tyler Kuhn 3-for-4 with three RBIs while junior Michael Burger also added two RBIs and was 1-for-3 in game one.
Canisius (4-18) starter Aaron Boag took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits. Boag fell to 0-1 on the season.
WVU left-hander Brendan Bergerson improved to 1-0 as he allowed only one run on eight hits in his first complete game of the season.
Seven different Mountaineers recorded an RBI in game two to help West Virginia down Canisius and complete the sweep. Senior Justin Jenkins went 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI and sophomore Austin Markel was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Golden Griffin starter Bryan Smith took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season. Smith allowed four runs on three hits in 1.2 innings on the mound.
Josh Whitlock pitched his first complete game of the season for the Mountaineers. The right-hander struck out seven and allowed only one run on eight hits while facing 31 batters. Whitlock improved to 2-3 overall.
West Virginia will next travel to Louisville, Ky., to take on the Cardinals this weekend for a three-game series. WVU will take on Louisville at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 30. Game two will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 31. The series will close with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday, April 1.
