MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Junior right-hander Corey Walter hurled a complete game to lead the WVU baseball team to a 5-1 victory over New Orleans on Saturday afternoon at Hawley Field.

WVU improved to 14-13 overall, and recorded 12 hits to New Orleans’ five. The Mountaineers committed two errors.

Walter (2-2) pitched the first complete game by a Mountaineer pitcher this season, striking out eight with one walk in 9.0 innings. He allowed one run and scattered five hits.

Senior catcher Alan Filauro batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while junior left fielder Jacob Rice hit two doubles, drove in one run and scored a run.

The win also gave coach Randy Mazey his 200th career victory as he previously made head coaching stops at Charleston Southern and East Carolina.

Junior first baseman Ryan McBroom hit his second homer in as many days with a solo shot to left field, giving WVU a 1-0 lead after two innings. The homer was his fifth of the season and ranks him second on the team behind junior designated hitter Matt Frazer (6).

A two-run single to center field by Filauro extended WVU’s lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Junior third baseman Ryan Tuntland and McBroom drew walks to start the frame and were sacrificed by sophomore second baseman Justin Fox prior to Filauro’s single.

Reese Kanter scored New Orleans’ lone run of the game in the sixth inning with a solo home run just clearing the right field fence.

Rice’s second double of the day drove in sophomore center fielder Bobby Boyd in the seventh inning, while Rice later scored on a wild pitch to bring the WVU advantage to 5-1.

Lefty Stone Speer took the loss for the Privateers, allowing five runs on 11 hits in 7.0 innings with four strikeouts and four walks.

The teams conclude the four game series this afternoon with live stats available on WVUsports.com.
