AUSTIN, Texas – A successful hit and run by sophomore second baseman Billy Fleming led the WVU baseball team to a 6-3 victory at Texas in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon.

The win gave WVU a 2-1 series win and improves WVU’s overall record to 23-18 (6-6 Big 12).

Fleming executed a hit and run with runners on first and second to give WVU the 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th. Junior third baseman Ryan Tuntland scored on the play, while junior first baseman Ryan McBroom moved up to third.

Following Fleming’s hit, a full-count walk to junior designated hitter Matt Frazer loaded the bases for junior left fielder Jacob Rice, who knocked a two-run single to left field, bringing the lead to 6-3.

Fleming finished with three hits, one run, one RBI and a stolen base. Rice also had three hits with one home run, one run and three RBIs. As a team, the Mountaineers recorded 11 hits to Texas’ four.

Junior right-hander Corey Walter (3-4) earned the win in relief, allowing one run, no earned, on two hits in 4.2 innings. Walter struck out four and walked five. Junior righty Pascal Paul picked up his third save of the year, pitching a perfect ninth inning after coming on with no outs and runners on first and second.

Sophomore shortstop Taylor Munden broke the scoreless draw with a leadoff double down the left field line in the top of the fourth inning. Munden would score on a fielder’s choice to second base by Tuntland.

After Texas scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1, Rice notched a home run to left field to take back the lead. The homer was the second of the season for Rice.

The Longhorns came back once again and took a 3-2 lead with a two-run bottom of the fifth inning. C.J. Hinojosa hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Brooks Marlow, while Weston Hall gave Texas the lead by scoring on a passed ball.

WVU mounted a two-out rally to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth. McBroom began the comeback with a single up the middle, and was advanced to third base on a single to center field by Fleming. Frazer then singled through the left side to score McBroom.

Sophomore lefty John Means took a no-decision for WVU, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits in 4.1 innings. Means struck out three and walked two batters.

Texas’ Nathan Thornhill gave up three runs on five hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings for the no-decision.

Four different Longhorns recorded one hit apiece.

WVU returns to action for a non-conference matchup at Youngstown State on Wednesday, April 24. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and live stats are available via WVUsports.com.
