FORT WORTH, Texas – TCU scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the WVU baseball team, 4-3, on Friday evening at Lupton Stadium
West Virginia held a 3-1 lead entering the ninth inning with senior right-hander Corey Walter
on the mound. Walter issued back-to-back walks and was relieved by junior right-hander Michael Bennett
. Derek Odell advanced the runners up and was safe at first base after laying down a sacrifice bunt turned infield single. A single to center field by Boomer White cut the lead to 3-2 with the bases still loaded. Sacrifice flies to right field by Kevin Cron and Dylan Fitzgerald scored the game-tying and game-winning runs for the Frogs.
The Mountaineers fell to 16-9 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play. TCU improves to 17-12 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
For the third consecutive weekend, junior left-hander Harrison Musgrave
(3-1) was in line for the win and took a no-decision. Musgrave allowed one run on seven hits in seven innings, striking out five and issuing two walks.
Junior left fielder Jacob Rice
had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs to lead WVU at the plate.
Rice picked up his second hit of the evening in the top of the sixth to break the scoreless draw, putting the Mountaineers ahead 2-0. Junior second baseman Billy Fleming
started the two-out rally by beating out an infield single to second base. Senior first baseman Ryan McBroom
was then walked, bringing up Rice. Rice cleared the bases with a triple that went past outstretched TCU right fielder Dylan Fitzgerald and bounced off the right field wall.
TCU struck in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out bases loaded single through the left side to cut the WVU lead to 2-1. White scored on the Keaton Jones single, but Musgrave struck out Garrett Crain to end the threat.
Junior shortstop Taylor Munden
plated a run in the top of the seventh with a two-out single into left field, scoring junior third baseman Michael Constantini
to make it 3-1. Constantini reached on fielder’s choice and advanced on back-to-back wild pitches.
TCU starter Brandon Finnegan (5-2) struck out seven in 5.2 innings, but allowed two runs on four hits with three walks in the no-decision. Trey Teakell (1-0) allowed one run on two hits with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings for the win.
Fitzgerald, Jones, Odell and White had two hits each for TCU.
The teams will close out the series with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. EST, on Saturday.
