Fleming Named Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - After becoming just the second Mountaineer in program history to hit for the cycle, junior second baseman Billy Fleming has been named the Varsity Sports Report Athlete of the Week.
 
Fleming went 10-for-17 (.588) at the plate last week in four games and completed the rare cycle on Sunday at Kansas. Additionally, he scored a total of six runs, drove in two runs and had a .611 on-base percentage. At Kansas on Sunday, Fleming hit his first career home run and began the game 4-for-4, completing the cycle in the sixth inning. He finished the game 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs. Fleming went 3-for-4 against Virginia Tech (5/6), 2-for-4 at Kansas (5/9) and 1-for-3 at Kansas (5/10).

This Week in Baseball
West Virginia will play four games this week, beginning with a game at Maryland on Tuesday, May 13 at 2 p.m. … the Mountaineers will then travel to Texas Tech from May 15-17 for a Big 12 series … Thursday’s game will start at 7:30 p.m. ET, Friday’s game will begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s finale is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
 
Last Week in Baseball
The Mountaineers went 1-3 last week, getting swept at Kansas over the weekend in a key Big 12 series … despite the sweep, the bats stayed hot, posting a .324 batting average and tying a season high with 18 hits in a loss at Kansas on Sunday.

West Virginia competed at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., recording multiple season bests ... senior Chene Townsend led the way while winning the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 13.46.

After tying her season-best mark in the triple jump this past weekend, senior Stormy Nesbit has posted season-best marks in each of her last two outings entering the Big 12 Championships ... senior Sarah Martinelli competed in the 1,500 meters for the first time this season, coming in 11th place overall with a time of 4:22.92 ... in the high jump, sophomore Marsielle McBeam had an outdoor season-best mark in the high jump, finishing in fifth place with a jump of 1.71 meters. 
 
This Week in Rowing
The West Virginia University rowing team travels to Oak Ridge, Tenn., to compete for the Conference USA crown on May 17 at Melton Hill Lake. 
 
Last Week in Rowing
The Mountaineers were idle in preparation for the C-USA Championship.
