MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team (12-7) lost the third game of its series with Eastern Michigan (3-10), 12-3, Sunday afternoon at Hawley Field.
The Eagles tallied three runs in the second inning to take an early 3-0 lead off three walks and two hits allowed by WVU starter Tino Medina.
Eastern Michigan broke the game wide open with a six-run fifth inning to push the score to 9-0, which proved to be more than enough for EMU starter David Pieron.
Pieron (2-2) tossed six solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits with one strikeout and no walks to pick up the victory.
Medina (1-2) lasted four and one-third innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits while striking out three and walking five.
EMU's Tony Palazzolo went 3-6 with four runs batted in while Luke Beeler added three hits and three runs scored. Eagle centerfielder Ryan Arnett went 2-3 with four RBI while Ryan Goleski roped a solo home run.
Senior Tim McCabe led the Mountaineers offensively, going 3-5 with one run scored. Freshman Casey Bowling added a solo home run for West Virginia.
The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday, March 25, for a doubleheader against Coppin State, beginning at 4 p.m., at Hawley Field.
