Barring any late cancellations or additions, the rosters for this year’s old-timer’s touch football game taking place prior to the Gold-Blue Spring Game will be a virtual Who’s Who of Mountaineer football.

Where else can you see Pat White and Major Harris play in the same game, or Owen Schmitt going up against Aaron Beasley and Mike Logan, or Rimington Award winner Dan Mozes trying to block All-Pro Darryl Talley?

Well, Friday night you will get the chance to see that and much, much more in what is shaping up to be the greatest collection of Mountaineer football talent ever assembled in one place.

“This momentum started with the great success we had getting many of these guys back last year and the great experiences that they had,” said WVU Varsity Club director Dale Wolfley. “And No. 2, we are reaching out to former athletes, and we are extremely pleased with the response we have received.”

Nearly 40 former NFL players, including Pro Bowlers Talley, Jeff Hostetler and Renaldo Turnbull, a good number of players from the 1989 Fiesta, 2005 Sugar and 2007 Fiesta Bowl teams - considered the three best in school history - as well as many former coaches and administrators will be back on campus in what should be an unforgettable evening.

“There are many players coming back this weekend that have not been back on campus since they played,” Wolfley said.

And leading them all are four coaching legends: Bobby Bowden and Jim Carlen for the Gold team and Don Nehlen and Frank Cignetti for the Blue team.

“Those four coaches, as well as Pat White and Major Harris, will be on hand for the ceremonial coin toss,” said Wolfley.

The old-timer’s game is only a small part of the great things happening Friday, beginning with the invitation-only retirement luncheon for associate athletic director Garrett Ford at the Morgantown Events Center beginning at noon. More than 600 people are confirmed to attend.

Following that, a Coaches’ “Chalk Talk” round table discussion with Carlen, Bowden, Cignetti and Nehlen will take place at the Waterfront Place Hotel, adjacent to the Events Center, at 4 p.m. Those interested in attending that event (and the special autograph session beforehand that now includes Pat White and former Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman John Browning) should contact the Mountaineer Athletic Club toll-free at 1-800-433-2072.

“Not only will people get to listen to four great coaches talk football, but they will also be sitting with a roomful of Mountaineer greats as well,” Wolfley pointed out.

Across town at the Erickson Alumni Center, “Fleming Corner” will be officially dedicated at 3 p.m. with memorabilia from legendary “Voice of the Mountaineers” Jack Fleming’s career as well as a bronze statue created by WVU alumnus Jamie Lester available for Mountaineer fans to enjoy. The room and statue, a gift from the late John Fleming (Jack’s brother), his wife Anita and son Jonathan, is located in the loggia area of Ruby Grand Hall. Fans are welcomed to attend the unveiling of the display from 3-5 p.m. on Friday.

Inside the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility, authentic Mountaineer football gear from the past decade will be on sale to the general public beginning at 2 p.m. And finally, WVU football fans will get their first opportunity to see Dana Holgorsen’s exciting, new high-scoring offense on display Friday night in the Gold-Blue Spring Game, set to get underway after the old-timer’s game. Tickets are just $10 and a portion of the proceeds from the game will benefit WVU’s Children’s Hospital.

Also, a live video stream of Friday’s spring game will be available for free through MountaineerTV beginning at 7 p.m.

“If you are a Mountaineer football fan can it get any better than this?” said Wolfley. “There will be a lot of history in that stadium on Friday night.”
