MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Associate Athletic Director and Executive Director of the Mountaineer Athletic Club Matt Borman has announced two new hires as well as a promotion within the MAC staff.

“I am extremely excited to add two wonderful new members to our Mountaineer Athletic Club staff and it is nice to be able to promote Kevin (Miller) from within because he has done a great job for us this past year and is very deserving,” Borman says.

Susan Hammond joins the Mountaineer Athletic Club staff as the director of donor relations and special events. She will manage a comprehensive stewardship plan to support WVU athletic programs involving donor cultivation, gift acknowledgements and special events.

Hammond came to the MAC after spending seven months as the director of donor relations/campaign coordinator at the WVU Foundation. In that position, she ensured stewardship of donors and engaged and informed prospects on the needs of WVU and the benefits of donating. Hammond also coordinated various activities to build awareness for the “A State of Minds” campaign.

Prior to her time with the WVU Foundation, Hammond served as president for Cardinal Consulting, LLC, in Morgantown, for four months, where she consulted on fundraising strategy for multiple political candidates, including Congressman David McKinley’s re-election campaign. She also developed comprehensive fundraising plans to enhance donor cultivation and managed donor relations. Hammond served as the finance director for McKinley for Congress from October 2011 – August 2012, where she managed the fundraising for the Congressman’s 2012 re-election campaign, developed, executed and tracked the fundraising plan and coordinated statewide fundraising events.

Hammond received her bachelor’s degree in public relations from the University of Alabama in 2003.

Michael Gilstorf joins the Mountaineer Athletic Club staff as major gifts officer. Gilstorf is responsible for securing high-end annual gifts and funds for major capital projects, as well as endowing student-athlete scholarships.

Prior to WVU, Gilstorf was the assistant director of the East Carolina University Pirate Club since February 2011. He managed 16 regional chapters of the Pirate Club rep system, along with building relationships with donors and participating in the overall fund raising strategies of the ECU Educational Foundation.

Gilstorf spent roughly two years with his alma mater, the University of Tennessee, most recently as a development assistant in athletics. He brought in more than $200,000 in new donations for annual and capital campaigns, in addition to overseeing the Tennessee Fund.

“Susan and Michael are great additions to our team within the Mountaineer Athletic Club,” says Borman. Susan’s past role within the WVU Foundation has prepared her to relate to all of our donors, while Michael has a wealth of experience from East Carolina and Tennessee.”

Kevin Miller, who was hired in April 2012 as the major gifts officer, has since been promoted to assistant athletic director of the annual fund. Miller is now responsible for managing and operating West Virginia’s annual fund.

Prior to WVU, Miller spent three years as the assistant athletic director for development at Georgia State University and oversaw the annual giving program. Under Miller, the program grew its unrestricted annual dollars by over 1,500% and its donor base by 450% in his last two fiscal years at GSU.
Miller is a 2005 graduate of West Virginia University and earned his master’s degree, also from WVU, in 2006.

“Kevin was successful as a major gifts officer and I’m excited to see his potential continue to grow as he is now able to run our annual fund and serve in an assistant athletic director capacity,” Borman says. “I have high expectations for the Mountaineer Athletic Club and I see the entire staff heading down a successful path this season with Kevin taking on a new role, and Susan and Michael joining the staff.”
