MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 17 West Virginia University men’s soccer team will close out a four-game homestand with a non-conference match against Iona on Wednesday, Sept. 26, Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The match will begin at 7 p.m.

“I’ve watched them play and they’re probably the best soccer-playing team that we have seen so far this year,” coach Marlon LeBlanc says. “This is one of those games where records can be deceiving and they are an excellent opponent. We are really looking forward to this game and hoping our fans come to support us against a very good opponent.”

Most recently, the Mountaineers (5-2-1) extended their unbeaten streak to four games and win streak to three games with a 4-0 win over Florida Atlantic last Sunday in WVU’s first ever Mid-American Conference match.

Freshman Nick Raskasky notched two goals in the win, while freshman Kyle Underwood and senior Travis Pittman each scored one. The Mountaineers dominated statistically in shots (18-2), shots on goal (10-0) and corner kicks, while twenty-two players saw action for WVU with freshman Majed Osman leading all players with five shots, including three on goal.

Senior goalkeepers Pat Eavenson and Yale Tiley combined for the shutout as Eavenson played the first half and Tiley earned his first career appearance in the second half. Neither faced a shot on goal.

Iona (2-6) began the season winning only one game in its first seven contests before defeating then-No. 25 ranked Monmouth, 3-1, last Saturday.

“They have four MAC Hermann Trophy candidates and that says a lot about the quality of our opponent,” LeBlanc says. “They’re very organized, they’re not going to beat themselves and they’ve played one of the toughest schedules in the country, all on the road.”

The Gaels are led by Hermann Award Watch List members; Sammy Adjei, Borja Barbero, Franklin Castellanos and Oscar Otto. Otto leads the team with two goals and two assists for six points, while Adjei has one goal and Castellanos has recorded one assist.

Barbero has started all eight games in net for Iona, allowing 13 goals with 33 saves for a 1.62 goals-against average.
