MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Qualifying for the Mid-American Conference Tournament will be on the line on Friday, Nov. 1, when the WVU men’s soccer team wraps up its road schedule with a match against Buffalo that is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
The Mountaineers (6-6-4, 1-2-1 MAC) are unbeaten in six of their last seven, but are currently No. 5 in the MAC standings. The top four in the final regular-season conference standings earn a MAC Tournament berth.
Akron is currently No. 1 with 12 points, followed by Western Michigan (7 points), Bowling Green (7 points), Hartwick (7 points), West Virginia (4 points), Buffalo (3 points) and Northern Illinois (0 points).
As he has all season, junior forward Andy Bevin
leads the Mountaineers with 20 points (7 goals, 6 assists), followed closely by sophomore midfielder Majed Osman
with 16 points (5 goals, 6 assists). Junior goalkeeper Lee Johnston
has posted three-consecutive shutouts, lowering his goals-against average to 1.06, while making 40 saves in 14 starts.
The Mountaineers defeated the Bulls, 2-0, in the last meeting between the two sides last season in Morgantown. Bevin notched the game-winning goal in the 51st minute, while Eric Schoenle scored an insurance goal six minutes later.
The Bulls are led this season by midfielder Russell Cicerone, who has scored five of Buffalo’s 11 goals. The Bulls also feature forward Nicolai Berry, who has two goals and three assists, ranking second on the team with seven points.
Buffalo goalkeeper Cassis Waleed has a 1.30 goals-against average with a record of 2-9-3. Waleed has made 60 saves with two shutouts.
