Swimming: O’Neill Places Seventh

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Matt O’Neill of the West Virginia University swimming and diving team took seventh in the 1-meter diving competition in the diving portion of the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday evening in Louisville, Ky.

“With the divers that were at the meet and the level of competition, Matt did a great job getting to the finals,” diving coach Michael Grapner said. “He stayed consistent and kept it together throughout the whole meet. I’m looking forward to another good day tomorrow and to have both divers perform at their top level.”

O’Neill was seventh after the preliminary round with a score of 275.00, while he finished the finals with a score of 289.65. O’Neill’s final dives included a forward 2.5 somersault (44.20), back 2.5 somersault (54.00), reverse 2.5 somersault (36.00), inward 1.5 somersault (46.80), inward 2.5 somersault (63.55) and a forward 1.5 somersault 1 twist (45.10).

Freshman Richard Pokorny finished competition in 18th place (196.40).

O’Neill and Pokorny will be back in action tomorrow on the 3-meter board. The preliminary round starts at noon, with the finals 6 p.m.
