WVU Foundation Honors Four Mountaineers
MORGANTOWN, W.V. - Four West Virginia University student-athletes were among the 36 WVU students honored today with the WVU Foundation Outstanding Senior Award. Those recognized were Nicco Campriani (rifle), Ahna Lewis (cross country/track and field), Andrea Miller (volleyball) and Abby Monson (volleyball). The students will be formally recognized during Commencement weekend at the WVU Honors Convocation at 5:30 p.m., Friday, May 11. The event will be held at the WVU Creative Arts Center. Less than one percent of the graduating students are named Outstanding Seniors; 11 percent of this year's recipients are Mountaineer student-athletes. Campriani, a native of Florence, Italy, concluded his Mountaineer career in 2011 with a first-place air rifle finish at the NCAA Championships. A National Rifle Association All-American, Campriani graduated in December with a 3.9 grade point average (GPA) and majored in industrial management systems engineering. The 2010 air rifle World Champion, Campriani will represent Italy at the 2012 London Summer Olympics. Lewis, a Morgantown native, is a double major in secondary education and English. A volunteer with AmeriCorps, Lewis won the Elite 89 Award, an award given to NCAA Division I student-athletes with outstanding GPAs; she was the first Mountaineer to receive the award. Lewis plans to continue her education and applied to the University of Oxford in England to purse a Master's degree in English Language. A Shepherdstown, W.Va., native, Miller earned a 3.9 GPA while earning her bachelor's and master's degree from the Benedum Collaborative Program for Education with certifications in middle and early childhood education. Additionally, she earned more than 900 AmeriCorps volunteer hours. A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Miller has volunteered for Christian Help, Relay for Life, WVU Benefit for Haiti Relieve and the Children's Hospital. She also is a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Monson, a native of Centennial, Colo., is a double-major in business management and Spanish. President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Monson is a part of LeadWell and a student representative of the Code of Conduct Committee. She also is a board member of the 21st Century Business Scholars. Monson will attend the WVU MBA program post graduation in May. Established in 1995 to signify the 40th anniversary of the WVU Foundation, the Outstanding Seniors Award recognizes students for their contributions and achievements in scholarship, leadership and service. |
